Here we are again with another outdoor season about to start at
Kendrick Road. There will be a coffee morning on the 28th March to
meet up with fellow members and enjoy a cuppa. Due to severe frosts
my cuttings did not do well this year, any contributions of plants
that I could sell for the club would be greatly appreciated. A
further Curling Evening will be held on the 4th of April with soup
and a ploughman’s. This will be followed by the pre season social on
Saturday the 18th April starting at 7.00p.m in the Clubhouse and I
look forward to seeing you. A meal of cottage pie and vegetables
will be followed by a sweet to be served at 7.45p.m. The cost is
£5.00 per person so please order in advance from me on the enclosed
ticket. Numbers please, by the previous weekend, 10th/11th April to
help with the catering. Cheques made payable to Reading
Bowling Club please may be left in an envelope marked P. Snook at
Whiteknights.
The evening will also include the usual quiz games, a game of bingo,
and a raffle and, of course, the bar will be open.
A club drive will follow on the Bank Holiday Monday the 4th May with
a buffet and a list will be displayed in the Clubhouse.
Coaching with Peter Seaman is again available on a Monday evening,
we are always looking for new members, if you know anyone who would
like to play please bring them down on a Monday evening to have a go
and meet the other club members. If they are beginners have a word
with Peter to check he will be there to help them. A crown green
evening will be held on the 4th September. We will be doing our own
barbecue again with Peter helping Brenda and myself, details will
follow in the season.
Finals weekend is the 12th and 13th September. The usual meal will
be organised for the Saturday evening, chicken in sauce or curry,
this seems to be very popular for this day after some very good
bowling.
The Reading Mixed Fours will be held on Sunday the 27th bringing
outdoor bowls to a close. The green will close on Monday the 28th
September.
However, as 2008, curling or short mat will still be held on a
monthly basis with a Turkey & Tinsel sometime in December to round
off the year. Also, hopefully the country walks with a meal after
will continue during November, December, January and February. All
dates will be advertised on the board during the season.
Ladies Night will be in October and President Wyn will contact the
ladies in due course.
Look forward to seeing you all at Kendrick Road when we start the
new outdoor season.
Pam
Forget the doom and gloom, the catkins are out, spring is upon us
and our green looks increasingly inviting.
During the closed season a great deal of work has been accomplished
and the club house now meets all necessary safety requirements.
Last season was one of our most successful for years and we hope
that such results will become the norm.
We have every confidence that under the leadership of our new
captains, Margaret Gregory, Brian Price and Duncan Wilkins the clubs
success and reputation will continue to grow, to achieve this
however is a team effort and our captains will be looking for
support and commitment from all members. With our reputation high we
don't anticipate losing any playing members in the coming season but
remember we always welcome new recruits.
I look forward to the start of the season and the opportunity for us
all to meet up again.
Wyn
I look forward to being captain of Reading Bowling club in 2009. I
am of course very much aware of the responsibilities of being
captain and shall endeavour to uphold and maintain the traditions
and values of this great club.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish all members, good
health and good bowling in 2009 along with success in club
competitions.
Brian
I look forward to joining you all at Reading for the outdoor season
once the present snow has melted and the sun hopefully is shining on
us. We have a full programme including TVLL and friendly matches as
well as two evening fixtures. I hope you will sign up early for as
many games as you can manage, the first being on 28th April. Val my
Vice Captain will be in charge of raffles and will be happy to
receive your three prizes, thank you, which all helps to swell the
club funds. I wish you a very happy bowling season and good health
till we meet on the green.
Margaret
DUNCAN'S MIXED MAYHEM...I would like to start by thanking LINDA
ROBINSON for all her hard work in 2008, if I am half as good as
Linda I will be more than pleased!
Although I am looking forward to the coming year's activities, I am
also going to have to ask for "a little help from my friends"! Well
ok, maybe more than a little, but knowing our members as I do, I am
sure this will be forthcoming. I will need particular assistance on
the catering front so if there is anyone out there who would be
willing to help please let me know. Don’t feel you have to wait for
me to call you! Just call or e-mail me
mixedcaptain@readingbc.co.uk and you know what they say about
many hands making light work!
I hope that the coming season will be both a success and an
enjoyment for us all. Good luck to everyone in READING BOWLS CLUB
for 2009 and I look forward to seeing you all again soon.
Duncan
The 2008 season for care and maintenance went very well. Many thanks
from me to all the volunteers who have given up their time to do the
work, once again saving the club money.
There is still plenty of work to be done around the green
surrounding areas, many thanks to those in the garden team for their
hard work during the winter keeping it looking so neat.
